Dr. H. Wesley Lafferty named President of the West Virginia American Academy of Family Physicians

Dr. H. Wesley Lafferty, family medicine physician at Boone Memorial Hospital in Madison West Virginia, was sworn in on March 26th as the president of the West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians.  Dr. Windel Stracener(AAFP Board Member) installed Dr. Lafferty as the 69th President.

“I am thrilled to assume this role for such an incredible organization,” said Dr. Lafferty. “It’s an honor to provide healthcare to rural communities across West Virginia and serve this organization as president as we continue to strengthen communities and family medicine across the state.”

As WVAAFP president, Dr. Lafferty will advocate on behalf of family physicians and patients to inspire positive change in the WV health care system. Lafferty was officially sworn in at a ceremony in front of AAFP national board members and his colleagues at the 69th Annual Scientific Assembly of the WV American Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Lafferty, a native of Wyoming County, is a graduate of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, West Virginia. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from West Virginia University in Exercise Physiology Morgantown, West Virginia. Dr. Lafferty has practiced medicine and served in a number of leadership roles since July 2010 at Boone Memorial Hospital.

2019 Family Doc of the Year

The West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians is pleased to announce that Andy Tanner, DO, has been named the 2019 Family Doctor of the Year. The award is the chapter’s highest honor and recognizes a lifetime of service as a dedicated family physician as well as the continued respect of his patients and fellow physicians. This is the 45thyear that the award has been given. Dr Tanner is an attending physician and the Program Director of the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) Family Medicine Residency Program. He is a native of Vienna, West Virginia. He graduated from Marshall University in 1990 with a BS in Cytotechnology and worked in a medical lab in Huntington for 5 years before entering medical school. He graduated from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in 1999 and completed the Osteopathic Internship and Family Medicine Residency Program at Charleston Area Medical Center. After graduation in 2002, Dr. Tanner joined the faculty as an assistant professor. In 2005, he became Program Director for the Osteopathic Family Medicine Program. Dr. Tanner is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians, and the American Society of Addictions Medicine. Additionally, he serves as a member of the West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr Tanner lives in Charleston, West Virginia, with his husband Dewayne Duncan.

2018 Family Doctor of the Year

April 12, 2018 – James M. Mears, MD a family physician from Charleston, WV was the recipient of the West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians highest award – Family Doctor of the Year for 2018.  The award was presented by Dr. Mary Ann Maurer during the West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians (WVAFP) 66th Annual Scientific Assembly held on April 12, 2018 at the Embassy Suites in Charleston, WV.  

The Family Doctor of the Year Award honors an outstanding, community-minded family physician that provides compassionate, comprehensive care.  Dr. Mears was recognized for being a role model to medical students and resident physicians as well as to his physician colleagues.  He is noted for his tireless devotion to improving the quality of life for his patients and bettering his community. 

Dr. Mears is an Assistant Professor, Department of Family Medicine, Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center of West Virginia University, Charleston Division and Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.  A board-certified family physician, Dr. Mears completed medical school at the Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine in 1988.  He did his family medicine residency at Charleston Area Medical Center, affiliated with West Virginia University, Charleston, WV.  In addition, Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at The Ohio State University, Wexner Medical Center and School of Medicine, Columbus, OH. 

Founded in 1948, the West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians represents more than 1,000 physicians and medical students statewide.  It is the largest medical specialty society devoted solely to primary care.  The West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians is a chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
