2011 Family Doc Award

Ross M. Patton, MD is the 2011 recipient of the Family Doctor of the Year Award from the West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians (WVAFP).

The award honors an outstanding, community minded family physician that provides compassionate, comprehensive care.  Candidates are nominated for their service as role models, professionally and personally, in their communities, to other healthcare professionals, physicians in training and medical staff.

Michael Gibbs, MD, President of the West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians stated, “Dr. Ross Patton is a role model for not only me but other family physicians.  He reflects the personal and professional values that our patients have come to expect from their families’ physician.

Dr. Ross Patton is a native of West Virginia and a professor of Family and Community Health at Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. He received his medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine. He completed graduate training at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio and the Department of Family and Community Health at Marshall University. He has been on faculty since 1987 following ten years of medical practice in rural West Virginia. Dr. Patton served in the National Health Service Corps and was awarded the Corp’s commendation medal. He is the chief of the Division of Sports Medicine, serving as team physician to Marshall University. He is the medical director of Student Health Services for the University. He has a special interest in obstetrics. Since coming to Marshall, he has become involved in international medicine and has worked at Hospital Vozandes in Shell, Ecuador. Dr. Patton is certified by the American Board of Family Practice and holds certification in Sports Medicine.

Founded in 1948, the WVAFP represents 1,000 physicians, family medicine resident physicians and medical students in the state of West Virginia. It is the largest medical society in West Virginia devoted solely to primary care.
