WVAFP 2023 Family Doctor of the Year - Amy Moyers Brenwalt, MD

Charleston, WV – March 24, 2023 – Amy Moyers Brenwalt, MD, Assistant Professor in the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine was the recipient of the West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians’ (WVAFP) highest award – Family Doctor of the Year for 2023. The award was presented by Benjamin Silverberg, MD FAAFP, chapter president, during the WVAFP’s 71st Annual Scientific Assembly, held on March 24, 2023 at the Embassy Suites in Charleston, WV.

The Family Doctor of the Year Award honors a family physician that has advanced the specialty of family medicine by inspiring family physicians through their individual acts of leadership and mentorship. Dr. Silverberg said of Dr. Brenwalt, “She is a leader in our specialty not only with her knowledge of women’s health issues, but as a servant leader that makes time to listen, advise, and cheer on her colleagues, residents, and students that need that encouragement. I am proud to call Dr. Brenwalt a colleague and friend, and it has been a joy to work with her on several peer-reviewed publications. Her passion for the specialty of family medicine inspires me. Her reputation as a thoughtful, compassionate physician has resulted in her expertise being in-demand by patients and their families. I cannot think of a better recommendation than telling others that Dr. Brenwalt is the clinician to whom I would bring my own children.”

A board-certified family physician, Dr. Brenwalt attended WVU as an undergraduate, going on to complete medical school in 2014 and her family medicine residency in 2017, both at WVU School of Medicine. Her focus of research and education centers on women’s health, while her passion in medicine is on healthcare worker well-being, as she recently completed the AAFP Leading Physician Well-being Certificate Program. Dr. Brenwalt shared upon receiving the award, “I simply love watching families grow and empowering patients to make educated decisions for their individual or family’s health while being encouraging and supportive throughout each stage of life that may come while working in an academic environment where I am able to support and encourage future medical doctors and family medicine physicians along the way. My colleagues in Family Medicine are wonderful physicians that work hard at changing the future of individual lives, families, and healthcare through their daily clinical work, academic inquisition, advocacy, and more. It is truly an honor to be selected for this award from such a hardworking and inspirational group of physicians.”

Founded in 1948, the West Virginia Academy of Family Physicians represents more than 1,000 physicians and medical students statewide. It is the largest medical specialty society devoted solely to primary care.  The WVAFP is a chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
